Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common and often painful condition affecting the band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of the foot. This thick ligament connects the heel bone to the toes, playing a key role in supporting the arch and absorbing shock during walking, running, and standing. When the plantar fascia becomes inflamed or irritated, it can lead to sharp, stabbing pain—usually concentrated at the heel and most noticeable with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest.

A variety of factors can contribute to the development of plantar fasciitis. Overuse from activities such as running, dancing, or prolonged standing can strain the plantar fascia, especially without adequate rest or supportive footwear. High arches, flat feet, obesity, and tight calf muscles can also increase the stress placed on the plantar fascia. Additionally, sudden increases in physical activity intensity or volume can elevate the risk of inflammation in this area.

Treatment for plantar fasciitis typically involves a combination of rest, stretching, and supportive measures. Resting and using ice on the affected area can help reduce acute inflammation and pain. Gentle stretching exercises targeting the calf muscles and plantar fascia are crucial for relieving tension, while footwear modifications, arch supports, and orthotic inserts provide additional support. In more persistent cases, physical therapy, night splints, or custom orthotics may be recommended. If conservative measures do not offer sufficient relief, a healthcare provider might suggest alternative treatments, such as injections or, rarely, surgery.

Part of why I created this website was to make sure patients purchased the correct product that I was recommending.

Plantar Fasciitis shoe inserts may help also by reducing the pressure on the heel where the fascia inserts. Here is a link to a product that I recommend.
